BrownfieldAgNews reports:

The National Pork Board approved more money for research into the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PEDv) virus at the National Pork Industry Forum in Kansas City.

Paul Sundberg, vice president of science and technology for the Pork Board, says an additional $650,000 dollars for PED research and information has been agreed upon. "It's going to be focused on feed research, feed related issues with biosecurity and with PED, on breeding herd immunity - it's one of the most pressing questions that we have in dealing with the disease out in the breeding herd right now."

The money, Sundberg tells reporters, will also be used toward discovering how the virus and related viruses got into our country and onto hog farms.

It adds to the $1.1 Million dollars in supplemental research funding the board approved throughout last year.

PEDv has been confirmed in 26 states and the virus has increased dramatically during the cold weather months.

The American Feed Industry Association, National Grain and Feed Association and other groups are joining the Pork Board and National Pork Producers Council in a PEDv research collaboration.
