Honey production in the United States totaled 149 million pounds in 2013, up 5 percent from 2012.

The National Ag Statistics Service says the number of colonies increased 4 percent last year to 2.64 million and average yield increased slightly to 56.6 pounds per colony. The data is collected from producers with five-or-more colonies.

The average honey price increased to a record-high $2.121 per pound last year up 6 percent from 2012. Prices vary by color and ranged from $2.076 per pound for extra light amber to $2.411 for area specialties.

North Dakota led the nation producing 33.1 million pounds from 480 colonies yielding 69 pounds per colony. Mississippi has the highest yield, 116 pounds per colony from just 17 colonies.
