Newly released maps from Peter Sikkema, University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus show the dramatic spread of glyphosate-resistant Canada fleabane since its discovery in 2010. The weed, which is now present in 12 Ontario counties, is expected to continue to spread this season.

Glyphosate-resistant Canada fleabane, also known as mare's tail or horseweed, has been confirmed as far east as Durham County. The weed can have a major impact on soybean yields when not properly managed.

"The key to managing glyphosate-resistant weeds like Canada fleabane is to use a pre-plant herbicide with multiple modes of action that are effective on the target weed," said Rob Miller, Technical Development Manager for Eastern Canada at BASF. "OPTILL™ is an excellent option for control since it gives growers the rapid burndown as well as the residual activity that will keep fields cleaner during early crop development."

Tank-mixed with glyphosate, OPTILL is a premix of the active ingredients KIXOR® and imazethapyr (Group 14 and Group 2) that uses multiple modes of action to control a broad spectrum of weeds. When applied pre-plant, OPTILL can provide residual control for four to six weeks.

"KIXOR provides the fastest and most effective control on glyphosate-resistant weeds especially Canada fleabane," said Miller. "With an increase in resistance it's important that growers add a unique mode of action to their weed management strategy."
