BrownfieldAgNews reports:

An opposition group has formed in Missouri to fight the Right to Farm proposed constitutional amendment which goes before voters this summer.

"Missouri Food For America" is headed by former Lieutenant Governor Joe Maxwell who is a hog farmer and vice president of Outreach and Engagement for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Maxwell says the Right to Farm amendment wording and campaign are deceptive. He says farmers are already protected by the Missouri Family Farm Act of 1975.

He says, "This amendment is about ensuring the largest multi-national corporation constitutional rights here in Missouri so they can do whatever they want to us neighbors out in the country."

Maxwell says the amendment is actually intended to protect big corporate farms - like Smithfield Foods- from regulations.

"What other industry has constitutional protections to do whatever they want and strips the local voice, either at the local level, the county level or even at the statehouse from being able to put in safeguards for neighbors out in the country?" Maxwell asks.

Supporters of the Right to Farm amendment say because of threats from activist groups like the HSUS to restrict livestock production and farming practices, a constitutional amendment protecting all farmers is necessary.
