BrownfieldAgNews reports:

The annual survey of food security among American households found that despite the improving economy in 2012, the number of people short of food remained the same.

USDA says food insecurity increased during the recession years of 2007 through 2009 as unemployment surpassed 10%.

By 2012 the unemployment rate fell to 8.3% yet 14.7% of American households lacked consistent access to adequate food compared to 14.5% in 2009 and 2010.

Alisha Coleman-Jensen of the Food Assistance Branch of the USDA Economic Research Service says while the unemployment rate decreased, overall inflation was nearly 1.5% from 2010 to 2012 and the price of food relative to all goods and services was two-thirds of a percent higher. Those increases basically offset the improvement in unemployment.

The 2013 numbers will be released in September.
