Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports:

Ryan Cos. US Inc. has inked a deal with Bayer CropScience to develop a new 135,000-square-foot building in Ryan's Dean Lakes development at the southeast quadrant of Highway 169 and County Road 83.

The lease, which was signed in late June, means Bayer will transfer operations and about 40 employees from a 115,000-square-foot space it occupies less than a mile away in a building north of Highway 169.

Ryan plans to start construction of the $15 million project in August and complete it by January 2015.

The new facility will also have room for a future 44,800-square-foot expansion.

Bayer CropScience manufactures equipment used to apply products to seeds to protect them from insects and disease. It traces its roots in Minnesota to its 2004 purchase of former Gustafson Equipment, which was based Plano, Texas but had been founded in South Dakota. Shakopee is one of about 50 U.S. locations for German-based Bayer, best known for pharmaceutical products.

The new center will allow Bayer to have a more efficient operation and to modernize its production lines and warehousing areas, said Greg Coffey, a Bayer corporate spokesman. It will also be used as a space for the company to meet with customers, train seed applicators and visit with agriculture-oriented groups, he said.

The site's visibility and amenities such as nearby restaurants and hotel rooms, helped attract Bayer, said Casey Hankinson, vice president of development at Ryan.

"It was important to them to feel part of a community, and I think there was no better spot in Shakopee for that than Dean Lakes," He said. "When you drive into the site, there building is going to be right there in front of you."
