PURDUE RELEASES DATA ON FARMERS' USE OF DEALER FINANCING Jul. 7, 2017
Source: Purdue University news release
Would you have expected a larger share of producers to report they are not using dealer financing in our 2017 survey, relative to 2012? Neither did we.
Just over half of our respondents reported not using dealer financing for capital equipment purchases. This represents about a five percent increase since 2012. Perhaps as producers have scaled back on equipment purchases, they have also worked to pay down existing balances.
About sixty percent of respondents indicated that they use no dealer financing to buy expendable inputs such as seed, crop protection and animal nutrition. This is just a two percent increase since 2013. The share of producers getting all of their financing for these inputs from dealers continues to decline since first asking the question in 2008.
