USDA RELEASES "2018 FARM BILL & LEGISLATIVE PRINCIPLES" REPORT
Agri-Pulse reports:

USDA chief Sonny Perdue today released a set of principles that he hopes Congress will use as a road map as it debates and crafts the 2018 farm bill. The wide-ranging document that will be delivered today to Capitol Hill touches on everything from improving crop insurance to increasing investments for marketing U.S. ag commodities overseas.

Under the "Farm Protection & Conservation" section, USDA advocates "a variety of innovative crop insurance products and changes, enabling farmers to make sound production decisions and to manage operational risk."

The document also addresses the controversial issue of reforming the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps. The next farm bill, USDA says, should "support work as the pathway to self-sufficiency" and only use feeding programs "for those truly in need."

"Since my first day as the Secretary of Agriculture, I've traveled to 30 states, listening to the people of American agriculture about what is working and what is not," Perdue said in a statement released this morning. "The conversations we had and the people we came across helped us craft USDA's 'Farm Bill and Legislative Principles' for 2018."
