AG SEC'Y PERDUE ADVOCATES FOR CROP INSURANCE PROGRAM AS IS
Agri-Pulse reports:

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue won't quite disavow President Trump's proposed cuts to crop insurance, but Perdue is making strong statements in support of the program.

Trump's fiscal 2019 budget proposes a variety of cuts to crop insurance, the largest of which would save $22 billion over 10 years by slashing premium subsidies.

Perdue told reporters at USDA's annual Agricultural Outlook Forum yesterday that crop insurance is a "viable part of the safety net" and that the American public "gets a good deal" on subsidies for the program.

Perdue declined to say whether he tried to talk the White House out of including the cuts in the budget, but he seemed to hint that's what he said. While it would be inappropriate to disclose private conversations "we were advocates for the American farmer," Perdue said.
