Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening was among a small number of U.S. agricultural leaders to meet with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in the Roosevelt Room of the White House on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

The meeting, also attended by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, reviewed the agricultural trade situation, clouded by retaliatory tariffs.

Boening said Trump told the group that agriculture is very important to him, and the group talked about progress in trade talks. Recently, the administration announced the framework of a new trade deal with Mexico.

"They get it," Boening said. "It's clear that the administration understands the importance of agriculture and trade."

Perdue outlined the government's trade mitigation package launched this week. The package is aimed at assisting farmers impacted by the current trade dispute. Perdue is optimistic, Boening said, about progress with the European Union and future negotiations with nations in the Pacific.

"We expressed appreciation for the assistance," Boening said. "Everyone understands this is not ideal, but it will help manage the damage until the administration can get these trade deals worked out."
