One aspect of my job that I have always enjoyed is the opportunity to engage with young people interested in agriculture. I am always encouraged and inspired by these interactions as the next generation of agriculture leaders are an impressive group of people. It is also a group of people that the world needs to succeed to ensure food security. This is topic I recently highlighted in my keynote at the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists Congress in Interlaken, Switzerland.
At the event, I was surprised and thrilled to meet a group of agriculture communications students from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (my home state - Go Illini!). It was great to connect with Owen Roberts, Lecturer and Director of Agricultural Communications at the University of Illinois, and some of his student journalists.
Two quick observations:
First, young people today will be the driving force behind the transformative changes we need to see in our food systems. Future agricultural journalists, in particular, have a unique ability to shed light on the complexities and challenges of modern agriculture. They can amplify the voices of farmers and help shape the global dialogue around food production, sustainability, and our planet's food systems. Their role in communicating the importance of agriculture and its innovations is crucial.
Second, I want to commend Professor Roberts and his students for taking the initiative to visit Europe. Experiencing different cultures through international travel is a fantastic way to learn and develop new and more informed perspectives. Traveling abroad isn't always easy (can even be frustrating at times), but I strongly believe the benefits are enormous. I had the opportunity to study abroad as a junior in college and I can say, without hesitation, it was transformational for me, my career, and my appreciation for different cultures and perspectives.
