BILL INTRODUCED IN HOUSE TO FUND FFA AND 4-H MEMBERS FOR CAREERS IN AGRICULTURE
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

The head of the National FFA Organization says a bill recently introduced in the U.S. House could help students better prepare for careers in agriculture.

Scott Stump tells Brownfield the Youth Lead Act provides funding to introduce agriculture to students. "As we see it, there's a war for talent going on right now across the country."

The bipartisan legislation, sponsored by Congressmen Don Bacon of Nebraska and Eric Sorenson of Illinois, would allow the Ag Secretary to provide grants to support operations of FFA, 4-H and the Scouts. It authorizes $5 million annually from 2024-2028.

Stump tells Brownfield some programs are underfunded. "Grants like this can allow a teacher to get the professional development that they need. That can also give them classroom tools, resources and equipment that's up to date and ready to connect students with so that they can use it both in the classroom. Then as we evolve the career development events that they are equipped and ready to succeed."

Bacon says the grants will help ensure youth can participate in these organizations to help secure the country's leadership in agriculture and other industries.

Sorensen says expanding federal investments can support the critical work in equipping young people with the skills they need to contribute to their communities.

The legislation was also sponsored by Sanford Bishop of Georgia, Don Davis of North Carolina, Monica De La Cruz of Texas, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Mike Lawler of New York, Doug LaMalfa of California, Jimmy Panetta of California and David Valadao of California.
