U.S. - INDIA TRADE AGREEMENT INCLUDES SORGHUM
Source: National Sorghum Producers

Lubbock, TX -- This week marked a major breakthrough in U.S.-India trade, with President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing a framework Interim Trade Agreement that advances reciprocal market access and sets the stage for a broader bilateral trade deal.

Critically for sorghum growers, U.S. sorghum is explicitly included in the agreement, a significant win that reflects sustained grower advocacy and years of industry-led market development. The framework outlines tariff reductions and purchasing commitments across U.S. agricultural products, while committing both countries to continued work on reducing non-tariff barriers and expanding commercial trade flows.

India represents one of the world's fastest-growing long-term markets for U.S. sorghum, particularly in poultry, livestock feed, and emerging biofuels pathways. This announcement builds on extensive on-the-ground engagement by the U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council and investment by the United Sorghum Checkoff Program, which have helped strengthen buyer relationships, technical understanding, and commercial readiness in the Indian market. Those efforts positioned U.S. sorghum well as trade barriers began to move.

While additional details and implementation timelines are still forthcoming, and India is expected to maintain certain protections for sensitive domestic sectors, this announcement represents a meaningful step forward. NSP will remain closely engaged with the administration, USTR, and USDA to ensure the agreement is fully implemented and translates into durable, real export opportunities for U.S. sorghum growers.
