May 6, 2026 BrownfieldAgNews reports: Nebraska Senator Pete Ricketts says a new food labeling bill in the U.S. Senate would create much needed transparency in the marketplace. He says the FAIR Labels Act distinguishes between products raised by livestock producers and plant-based or cell-cultivated proteins. "We want to make sure that consumers have the right information for the products they buy at the grocery store." Ricketts tells Brownfield, "If you have a plant-based or any other sort of product that is purporting to be something like a hamburger or meat product, then you have actually have to label that it not meat and it's a plant-based product." The Fair and Accurate Ingredient Representation (FAIR) on Labels Act requires cell-cultivated protein and plant-based alternative protein products to bear an accurate label. The bill also prohibits the sale of mislabeled cell-cultivated protein or plant-based alternative protein Companion legislation in the House is led by Representatives Mark Alford (R-MO), Mike Flood (R-NE), and Buddy Carter (R-GA).
