EPS OFFICIAL: ENDING DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID DERATEMENTS TO BENEFIT FARMERS, TRUCKERS
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

A U.S. EPA official says the agency's proposal to end Diesel Exhaust Fluid system deratements would be a win for farmers and truckers.

Aaron Szabo is the assistant administrator of the EPA's Office of Air and Radiation.

"So this means that of all the 200 plus failure modes that have nothing to do with whether you're putting DEF in your equipment or not, if something goes wrong you are not going to have to worry about your equipment shutting down or going into limp mode."

Earlier this month, EPA administrator Lee Zeldin announced the proposed rule scales back the DEF warranty requirement while keeping nearly 90% of the NOx (smog-forming pollution) reductions in place.

Szabo tells Brownfield that many operators have been experiencing DEF issues that have caused them to lose trust in their equipment.

"You will be halfway through your day and out in the field potentially miles away from your garage and your equipment just stops working. That means not only do you lose the rest of that day, but you have to find a tow to get it back to your garage and you have to wait for it to be fixed."

He says the EPA's response is a direct result of concerns raised by farmers and truckers.

"The administration, specifically the president and Administrator Zeldin, have heard the people and heard the farmers that there's significant problems with what EPA has done with DEF requirements."

The EPA says the proposed rule change would save American truckers an estimated $12 billion, and up to $6,000 per new truck.
