VOLATILE FERTILIZER MARKET COULD CHANGE HOW FARMERS BUY INPUTS Jul. 29, 2026
BrownfieldAgNews reports:
An ag economist says he doesn't expect improvement in fertilizer prices anytime soon, and it may impact how they purchase inputs for the 2027 crop.
Gary Schnitkey with the University of Illinois says he doesn't have a crystal ball, but "There could be dramatic swings between now and spring. Spreading out the input decisions just like you would for spreading out sales, is a good thing and more important now than a year ago."
He tells Brownfield by diversifying purchasing habits, that can help producers better mitigate risk in a volatile environment. "I would suggest in this situation that it's probably good to place bets on both of them. If you typically buy moss of your inputs in the fall, then you should buy half of them in the fall and half them in the spring."
The Fertilizer Price Index shows prices are down 21 percent from last month, but up 10 percent from a year ago.
