USDA: PISTACHIO PRODUCTION TREND CONTINUES UPWARD TREND

Source: USDA news release

U.S. pistachio production totaled 1.58 billion pounds (in-shell basis) in 2025, the largest in history. This continues an upward trend throughout the 21st century. Production first surpassed 200 million pounds in 2000, exceeded 800 million pounds in 2016, and reached 1 billion pounds by 2020.

Larger pistachio harvests have coincided with expanded planted area, as bearing acreage likewise increased nearly fivefold over the past two decades.

Rising production has supported growing domestic and international demand. USDA, Economic Research Service (ERS) researchers estimate that per capita pistachio availability, a proxy for consumption, remained below almond availability last season but exceeded walnuts and pecans for the first time. Over the last decade, about half of the U.S. pistachio supply was exported each season, making export demand an influential factor in the price received by domestic pistachio producers.

The 2025 crop marked the tenth straight year the United States led the world in pistachio exports. This chart was drawn from the ERS Fruit and Tree Nuts Outlook, March 2026 edition.
