CATTLE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE DEVELOPER BREEDR RECEIVES $27 MILLION INVESTMENT

Source: Breedr news release

Austin, TX - Breedr, a cattle management software company, announced a $27 million Series B funding round to put individual animal records in the hands of more U.S. cattle producers as the industry rebuilds from a 75-year low. The funding will grow the Breedr U.S. team, bring the platform to more ranches and feedyards, and expand the data producers are able to utilize, including genomics.

Breedr is built to make cattle recordkeeping simple and useful for commercial operations. Producers can record breeding, calving, weights, treatments, genetics and performance on a phone while working cattle at the chute, in the pasture or during calving. That information becomes part of each animal's record and is available to the whole team, giving everyone a consistent view of the herd and better information to use when making day-to-day management decisions.

Those records also go to market with the cattle. Through Connected Beef, Breedr's cattle marketing program, producers can sell either through private treaty or on Superior Livestock Auction, reaching a national network of buyers without hauling a single head off the ranch. Each animal sells with its genetic, performance, growth, health and management history, so buyers know exactly what they're bidding on and producers have a chance to be paid for the work and data they've put into their cattle. The Connected Beef network has traded nearly $500 million in cattle so far this year.

"At a time when cattle numbers are at their lowest and ranchers are looking at how they rebuild, they need to maximize every animal on the ranch," said James Law, president of North America at Breedr. "Breedr does just that, giving you the information that lived in a paper notebook, that now lives on your phone, tablet or computer. This investment helps us get it into as many ranchers' hands as possible."

NextGen Cattle Co., a multibreed seedstock operation in Paxico, Kansas, uses Breedr to centralize data from its home herd and 37 cooperator herds. The operation also includes a 50,000-head feedyard. Before Breedr, the team relied on text messages, spreadsheets and a whiteboard in the shop. Today, calvings and treatments are recorded at the chute or in the pasture, and the whole crew can see them right away. The team sends thousands of DNA samples into Breedr each year. New employees learn the herd from the records, and the three breed associations NextGen works with receive consistent, accurate data.

"Having an app like Breedr just increases the accuracy and the integrity of the data we submit to breed associations, because it's collected day to day," said Joe Epperly, chief genetics officer at NextGen Cattle Co. "With Breedr, we're accurate to a fault. Everybody knows what happened as soon as it happened."

More than 2 million cattle are on the Breedr platform today. The Series B round was led by Partech, with participation from Latitude and Outsiders Fund, bringing Breedr's total funding to $46.6 million. Producers can learn more at breedr.co.
