Nov. 3, 2026 Source: National Wheat Foundation news release Washington, D.C. - Today, the National Wheat Foundation announces the 24 national winners of the 2026 National Wheat Yield Contest, representing 10 states and achieving an average yield of 146.40 bushels per acre. The contest also recognizes four national winners in the pilot digital yield category and 71 state winners from 22 states. State winners in the traditional contest categories achieved an average yield of 134.72 bushels per acre. Drought and reduced wheat acreage contributed to fewer entries than in past years. Several winners described the growing season as unusual, but despite these challenges, wheat growers once again demonstrated their resilience. The contest will announce its Top-Quality Award winners in mid-January 2027, following analysis of the national winners' wheat for grain, flour and finished-product quality characteristics. This quality component supports the contest's mission, established in 2016, to improve the productivity, quality and marketability of the U.S. wheat crop while fostering education and collaboration across all segments of the industry. Through the contest, top wheat producers share the management practices and technologies that help them achieve exceptional yields, high quality and stronger profitability. "Two participation trends stand out this year," said Anne Osborne, executive director of the National Wheat Foundation. "Montana and Washington increased both participation and their number of winners, with four national winners in each state. Interest in the contest also continues to grow in double-crop areas, where we receive more entries every year. Our contacts in those areas tell us that when they can grow both high-yielding and high-quality wheat before their double-crop soybeans, those are the most profitable acres on the farm." National winners will receive a trip to Commodity Classic in New Orleans in March 2027, where they will be honored at a winners' reception. Scott Brown, National Wheat Foundation chairman (ID), said, "The winners' reception at Classic is always one of the most rewarding nights of the year. We see these top-notch wheat growers from all over the country coming together to share stories and ideas. It is a small payoff for all the hard work everyone puts into the contest. The biggest payoff for contestants is the production information they learn and apply to all their wheat acres to achieve higher yield and quality on their whole farm."
