56 CONGRESSMEN CALL ON AG SEC'Y TO NOT DEREGULATE RR ALFALFA Jun. 25, 2010
BrownfieldAgNews reports:
Fifty-six members of the U.S. House and Senate have written to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, asking him to retain the regulated status of Roundy Ready alfalfa.
The group-which is headed by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Representative Peter DeFazio of Oregon-warns that the genetically engineered alfalfa will contaminate the crops of organic alfalfa farmers and result in significant economic harm to alfalfa seed producers and to the organic dairy industry.
The letter comes on the heels of this week's Supreme Court decision in a case related to USDA's potential deregulation of Roundup Ready alfalfa.
