Debbie Stabenow as the next Chair of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee. "We congratulate Sen. Stabenow on her selection to lead the Senate Agriculture Committee and we are excited about the opportunity to work with her in this role," MABA President Jim Byrum said. "Sen. Debbie Stabenow has a proven track record of standing up for agriculture nationally and in Michigan. Throughout her entire career as a public servant, Sen. Stabenow has been a tireless champion of agriculture, and the new technologies we need to feed more people, create more jobs and protect our natural resources." As chair, Stabenow will be a leader in developing policies that will affect U.S. agriculture, a $1.5-trillion-a-year industry. Her selection comes at a time when agriculture - both in Michigan and across the nation - is growing, providing a rare bright spot in the nation's economy. Stabenow has served on agriculture committees in the state House, the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Senate. She understands specialty crops, as well as general commodities such as corn and soybeans. She also has a strong grasp on the importance of nutrition programs within the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She understands the process, the players and the dynamic interests surrounding farm legislation and the importance of agriculture to our nation's economy. Stabenow also has a great understanding of trade issues. Stabenow represents a state that grows many of the crops grown in states all across the country. She understands the interaction between producer interests and farmer concerns about a safety net in case of serious crop failures or a collapse of the agriculture economy. Stabenow served as a leading voice for Michigan and specialty crop producers across the country during the crafting of the 2008 Farm Bill. The Farm Bill is up for renewal in 2012.
