Nov. 29, 2010 CropLife America (CLA) reports: CLA CEO Jay Vroom and former CLA board chairman Eric Wintemute ( AMVAC) joined Aaron Hobbs and several RISE member company representatives on Capitol Hill Nov. 18th for the "Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite Forum," sponsored by Representatives G.K. Butterfield (D-NC) and Don Young (R- All AK). The half-day discussion focused on the widespread nature of bed bug infestations and the difficulty in combating these persistent pests. The forum included three panels. The first panel included scientists and leaders from the apartment, hotel and pest management industries with a second panel comprised of affected private sector organizations. The third panel included EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs, USDA's Agricultural Research Service, and Housing and Urban Development, working as the Federal Interagency Bed Bug Task Force. Also, on the program were residential victims, including the president of a District of Columbia tenants association who spoke about an infestation in her home and community. One of the resounding themes of the meeting was the need for EPA to re-evaluate existing pesticide products for their ability to control bed bugs and to incentivize the research and development of new pesticide products. Congressmen Butterfield and Young hosted the forum to organize dialogue about bed bugs and to hear from affected parties as they prepare to introduce legislation in the new Congress that would create a grant program to assist states with hotel inspections. RISE will work with their offices and allies as legislation progresses on this issue. Tweet |
