The winning entry, "The Farm Journal Legacy Project," from the company's print and online titles Farm Journal, Top Producer, Dairy Today, AgWeb, AgDay, and U.S. Farm Report, also took home the Neal Award for "Best Integrated Package." According to judges, the piece, which earned the Grand Neal from a pool of 660 entries, empowered and transformed readers' lives, impressively integrating different forms of media to tell a story. Farm Journal Media's editorial staff accepted the Grand Neal Award from hosts Paul Maidment, principal and editor in chief of Bystander Media, and Rebecca Jarvis, business and economics correspondent for CBS News and news anchor of the Saturday Early Show. Last year the Neal Awards competition was transformed with the addition of 11 new categories to better reflect today's multi-platform media environment. This year, for the first time ever, awards were presented in categories for best editorial use of mobile and social media, and best range of work by a single author. Hanley Wood's Aquatics International article, "The Enemy Within;" "Social Media Boot Camp" from Summit Business Media's Agent's Sales Journal; and "Award of Excellence Winner: John Hillman" from The McGraw-Hill Companies' Engineering News-Record, were all recognized as Grand Neal finalists. Abe Peck, director of business-to-business communication and professor emeritus in service at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, chaired the Neal Board of Judges, which selected one Neal Award winner in each category and ultimately chose the Grand Neal recipient. ABM also honored the very best of the b-to-b industry through a series of special awards recognizing industry commitment: Wyatt Kash, Content Director/Editor at Large, 1105 Media - Events, was selected as the 43rd Annual G.D. Crain Award winner. ABM's Crain Award is given annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the development of editorial excellence in business media. Gary Thill, editor of Hanley Wood's Aquatics International, received the 2011 Timothy White Award for Editorial Integrity. The Timothy White Award recognizes exemplary leadership in the face of the challenges and pressures that editors face daily, and is given annually to an editor whose work displays courage, integrity and passion. Jane Kolleeny, managing editor of The McGraw-Hill Companies' GreenSource Magazine, was named 2011 McAllister Editorial Fellow. The McAllister Editorial Fellowship promotes the study of business media by placing fellows as teachers and advisors for approximately one week on the Medill Magazine Project at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
