Dec. 6, 2011 Source: DTN/The Progressive Farmer As the 2011 harvest wrapped up, outlook among American agribusinesses has become slightly more optimistic from pre-harvest outlooks, according to the latest DTN/The Progressive Farmer Agribusiness Confidence Index. The agribusiness index now stands at 100.2, a slight increase from the last survey in August, which came in at 97.8, However, it is significantly down from last year's post-harvest survey, which was at 119.7. The survey indicates that agribusiness managers are more optimistic about their current operations than future prospects. The Present Situation Index, which reflects current sentiment regarding sales to farmers and ranchers and current profitability, is 118, significantly above August's survey index, which was 110.4. However, the Expectations Index, which measures sentiment on business activity 12 months from now, is 88.4, a slight drop from the August results, which came in at 89.5 and a significant drop from last year's post-harvest survey which came in at 118. The 29.6 point dip in the Expectations Index from last year's Agribusiness Confidence Index could reflect an overarching trend of uncertainty among agribusinesses of what the economy will do in the next year.
