LARGEST EVER ONE YEAR DROP IN TEXAS CATTLE HERD Dec. 28, 2011
BrownfieldAgNews reports:
Texas has been experiencing the worst drought in its history-and it has led to the largest ever one-year decline in the state's cow herd.
David Anderson, who monitors beef markets for the Texas Agri-Life Extension Service, estimates the number of cows in Texas has declined by about 600-thousand head since January 1st of this year. That represents a 12 percent decline from the roughly five million cows the state had at the beginning of the year.
It's estimated that Oklahoma- the nation's second-largest cattle producing state-also saw about a 12 percent drop in cows this year.
Anderson says that in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana and Arkansas, about 200-thousand more cattle were slaughtered this year-a 20 percent increase over last year. He says that extra beef supply has helped meet increased export demand, but the loss of cows is going mean fewer cattle in future years.
