U OF ILLINOIS STUDY SHOWS HOW MUCH FARMLAND IS SOLD EACH YEAR May 1, 2013
Source: U of Illinois news release
This is a very interesting graphic that gives you a nice visual of how much farmland has been turning over by county. The study done at the University of Illinois suggests that while the amount is low, it is really closer to 0.5% when you take out family to family transactions.
Having a limited supply and high demand usually results in strong prices. We have not seen any such maps for others states but imagine most in the Midwest would look similar.
The bottom line is that farmland is a very unique asset. Yes, the market has not seen the number of sales that it has in the past, but there are and will be opportunities for those who are well connected and prepared when they arise. In a market like this, you are either ready or you miss out.
Some more details on this study can be found on the Dovers Cattle site at http://www.cattlenetwork.com/cattle-news/latest/Farmland-sales-are-frequent-but-does-much-of-it-get-new-ownership-181529251.html
