Writer of the Year

Jamie Cole, creative director of Red Barn Media Group, has been named the American Agricultural Editors' Association 2013 Writer of the Year. Cole was recognized recently during the Agricultural Media Summit in Buffalo, NY.

The award, sponsored annually by Syngenta, recognizes one AAEA member each year for outstanding writing. It is based on the rankings given by an AAEA team of writing judges after they read candidate portfolios - three stories chosen by the writers. All three of Cole's articles were written for Massey Ferguson FarmLife and MyFarmLife.com

One judge described Cole's writing this way: "To these intriguing subjects, this writer brings superlative reporting, obviously excellent interviewing skills and, most importantly, fine writing that is not a bit stuffy or overdone. The result? Stories that you can't stop reading, stories that will be handed off and forwarded many times, stories that wont be forgotten."

Cole is a long-time member of AAEA and a consistent award winner in both the design and writing contests each year, including being AAEA Writer of the Year in 2010 and the first-ever AAEA Designer of the Year in 2012. He has served on the AAEA board of directors and is the current chair of the AAEA Design Awards Committee. Prior to his career at Red Barn Media, he spent many years at DTN/The Progressive Farmer.

"Syngenta is proud to be the long-time sponsor of this prestigious award," noted company spokesperson Steve Goldsmith. "Jamie Cole, as this year's winner, is an outstanding agricultural journalist and a well-deserving recipient of the honor."

Photographer of the Year

William DeKay, photojournalist for The Western Producer, has been named the American Agricultural Editors' Association 2013 Photographer of the Year for the fourth year in a row. DeKay was recognized recently at the Ag Media Summit in Buffalo, NY.

The award, sponsored annually by Monsanto and Rabo AgriFinance, recognizes an AAEA member each year for outstanding photography. DeKay has earned 50 AAEA photography awards since becoming an AAEA member four years ago.

"When I look at a photographer's portfolio, I want to see consistently good images, a unique vision, technical skill, and a variety of image types, stories and moments," noted one of the contest judges. "This portfolio is full of aesthetically pleasing, beautiful moments and does well to deliver in all the areas necessary."

Added another judge: "I look for a photographer who has a consistent and individual point of view. This photographer captures beautifully seen moments, and there's a diverse and interesting use of different kinds of light throughout this portfolio."

William has been working as a photojournalist at The Western Producer since September 2008. His job involves travel around Western Canada covering news events and capturing the essence of Canadian agriculture and rural life. Prior to that, he did freelance work for the TIME, National Geographic and Canadian Geographic while living in rural Saskatchewan.

In 1997, he compiled and published a book of his photographs, titled "Down Home: A Journey Into Rural Canada." William was a photojournalist at the Detroit Free Press from 1987-1994, during which time he was shortlisted twice for a Pulitzer Prize in photography.

The AAEA Photographer of the Year is chosen from among those submitting a portfolio of 20 images. "William DeKay's portfolio displayed great moments, composition and subject matter," the judges concluded.
