THE PASSING OF PAUL BARTLETT, JR.
Kansas City Business Journal reports:

Paul Bartlett, Jr., former chairman of Bartlett & Co., died Saturday at age 94.

Bartlett & Co. was founded in 1907 by his father, Paul Bartlett Sr., but it was Paul Bartlett Jr. who turned it into one of the largest grain merchandising and storage companies in the United States. The company posted $2.3 billion in revenue in 2012, ranking it ninth on the Kansas City Business Journal's list of Top Area Private Companies.

Bartlett Jr. graduated from Yale University in 1941 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy, serving on a destroyer escort in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific throughout World War II. After the war, he joined his father's company, which was known at the time as Hart Bartlett & Sturtevant. The company took the name Bartlett and Co. in 1954.

Bartlett began taking leadership roles at the company in the late 1950s, becoming chairman in 1987. His accomplishments included building the River Rail grain elevator in Fairfax, which opened the local railroads to competition from river barges, creating huge opportunity for Bartlett & Co. to grow.

Bartlett was a director at UMB Financial Corp. for more than 50 years. He was also a director of Employers Reinsurance Corp. and a longtime member of the Kansas City Board of Trade. He was inducted into the Greater Kansas City Business Hall of Fame in 2012.

Bartlett & Co. is now led by his son-in-law James Hebenstreit, who is president and CEO.
