TURKEY BARNS INFECTED WITH AVIAN FLU TO BE OUT OF PRODUCTION FOR MONTHS Apr. 14, 2015
Red River Farm Network reports:
State and federal officials are responding to cases of avian influenza in commercial poultry operations.
Badger, Minnesota turkey producer John Burkel, who is a past president of the National Turkey Federation, says turkey growers are nervous.
RRFN asked Burkel how USDA de-populates a turkey flock. “
He reports, "The birds don’t leave the barn. They compost them inside with the manure in the barn. You have to go through the heat-cycle in the barn so they know that any virus present would be dead. You have to figure two-to-three months that you’re going to be down.”"
