DECOSTERS SENTENCED TO 3-MONTHS JAIL IN EGG SALMONELLA CASE Apr. 16, 2015
BrownfieldAgNews reports:
Two former egg industry executives have been sentenced to three months in jail for their roles in a major 2010 salmonella outbreak that originated in Iowa.
Austin "Jack" DeCoster and his son, Peter DeCoster, had both pleaded guilty last year to introducing adulterated eggs into interstate commerce.
Investigators said the DeCosters knew that their Quality Egg Company facilities in Iowa were at risk for salmonella contamination before the outbreak. The company has admitted shipping old eggs under false labels and bribing a USDA inspector.
The DeCosters will remain free while appealing their three-month sentence.
