MARKETER NEWS May 2006 Monsanto announces a $1 million gift to establish the Monsanto Center for Biotech Education within the FFA Enrichment Center which is being built on the Ankeny, IA, campus of the Des Moines Area Community College. "The Center for Biotech Education will showcase opportunities available through the use and further development of biotechnology," says Monsanto's VP of Global Plant Breeding Ted Crosbie. The Monsanto Center for Biotech Education will serve Iowa's 12,000-plus FFA members and agricultural science students, as well as, students with a general interest in science. Community leaders, farmers and the broader business community nationwide, will also benefit from the programming offered. DuPont announces it has formed DuPont Biofuels, a business unit, to expand into the global biofuel market. The unit will be headed by John P. Ranieri, VP and general manager of DuPont Bio-Based Materials, Energy and Specialities. Its focus will be on agricultural biotechnology, metabolic engineering, chemistry and process energy. MetLife, Inc., announces the recent expansion of its agricultural investments timberland finance operations with the formation of the National Timber Office located in Memphis, TN. MetLife and its affiliates oversee an $8 billion agricultural mortgage portfolio. MetLife's Agricultural Investments unit has expanded its timber operations with the addition of a team of timber specialists centrally located to provide capital to the forest products industry in the United States and other timber regions of the world. The office is led by S. Peter Headley, director of timber operations for MetLife Agricultural Investments. In addition to the national timber office, the unit has regional offices in Fresno, CA; west Des Moines, IA; Bloomington, IL; Overland Park, KS, (which also serves as the unit's headquarters) and Richmond, IN. Robert Merck is head of the unit. Ft Dodge Animal Health, announces the launch of its new livestock Web site, www.fortdodgelivestock.com. "This site is a fully functional and significant online resource for veterinarians, producers and horse owners," says Craig Wallace, vice president of marketing. The new site contains more than 600 pages of information about Ft Dodge Animal Health products, searchable by species - beef, dairy, swine and equine - and by product name or category. Within each page, viewers can link to the product label, as well as, documents providing a comprehensive look at current research and data pertaining to specific products. Kent Feeds announces a new package look and name to their poultry product line. The new line is called "Home Fresh Poultry Feeds ... Enriching a Wholesome Tradition." Although it has a new name and is packaged in new attractive bags,it has the same great nutrition, the company reports. Glades Crop Care (GCC), Jupiter, FL, was awarded the first ever 2006 IPM Achievement Award at the National Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Symposium held in St. Louis, MO. GCC provides scouting and consulting services in the southeastern United States and the Caribbean basin. It has conducted independent and collaborative research in all areas of pest management on some of the most intense and quality conscious crops. Jason Moss joins Brock Associates, Milwaukee, WI, as marketing consultant. USDA announces the release of an implementation plan that outlines timelines and benchmarks for the establishment of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), along with a plan for the initial integration of private and state animal tracking databases with NAIS. "Developing an effective animal identification system has been a high priority for USDA and we've made significant strides toward achieving a comprehensive U.S. system," said USDA Sec'y Mike Johanns. The implementation plan continues to set an aggressive timeline for ensuring full implementation of the NAIS by 2009. It establishes benchmarks for incrementally accomplishing the remaining implementation goals to enable the NAIS to be operational by 2007, and to achieve full producer participation by 2009. Several important components have already been accomplished. These include the development of premises registration systems in each state and the issuance of guidelines for the manufacture and distribution of animal identification numbers. More than 235,000 premises are currently registered. Dow AgroSciences Canada, Inc. moves its head office to downtown Calgary. In response to devastating wildfires that charred more than a million acres, claimed 11 lives and killed more than 10,000 head of livestock in the Texas Panhandle last winter, Pfizer Animal Health has contributed a variety of products to help veterinarians provide emergency relief to their livestock clients. "There was a tremendous need for antibiotics to treat secondary infections and for anti-inflammatory products," said Greg Quakenbush, DVM, director, Beef Veterinary Operations, Pfizer Animal Health. The most prominent injuries were from severe burns, smoke inhalation, and trauma from injuries.
