AT CLOSING July/August 2006 Alpharma Inc., Ft. Lee, NJ, announces Dean J. Mitchell is named Pres/CEO. Mitchell will succeed Ingrid Wiik, who previously announced she planned to retire as CEO once a successor was named. Mitchell has nearly three decades of senior management experience working at global pharmaceutical companies including Bristol-Myers Squibb and GlaxoSmithKline. In addition to overseeing various multi-billion dollar businesses, he also worked in strategic planning and product development and commercialization. DuPont and BP announce the creation of a partnership to develop, produce and market a next generation of biofuels to help meet increasing global demand for renewable transportation fuels. By pooling their knowledge and expertise, the two companies aim to be the world leaders in the development, production and growth of advanced biofuels, which today account for less than 2 percent of global transportation fuels. Current projections show that biofuels could become a significant part of the transport fuel mix in the future - possibly up to 30 percent in key markets. The first product to market will be biobutanol, which is targeted for introduction in 2007 in the United Kingdom as a gasoline bio-component. DuPont and BP are working with British Sugar to convert the country's first ethanol fermentation facility to produce biobutanol. Agriliance announces David Peters, is joining the company as Dir of Collaborative Ventures, effective July 31, 2006. He will be responsible for building collaborative relationships and partnerships with key customers and suppliers. Prior to joining Agriliance, Peters has spent 23 years in various mid- and senior management positions with La Salle Farmers Grain, Madelia, MN. Agrium Inc., Calgary, AB, announces it has entered into an agreement to acquire certain fixed assets and inventory of Pursell Technologies Inc. and PTI for a purchase price of $74.5 million. The PTI acquisition is expected to increase Agrium's sales and earnings in the growing and environmentally friendly specialty fertilizer business. Agrium has pioneered the development of cost-effective controlled release fertilizer products for use in broad acre crop applications, and this transaction is expected to further support that effort. Agrium intends to combine the sales and earnings from the PTI acquisition with those of its other specialty fertilizer products into a new business segment. Broin Companies, Sioux Falls, SD, the second largest producer of ethanol in the country, announces its Frontier Ethanol plant opening near Gowrie, IA, is the 100th ethanol plant to begin operations in the United States. Also in the renewable fuels sector, after only one week of fundraising, Iowa Renewable Energy raised over $19.5 million from investors to build a 30 million gallon-per-year biodiesel production facility near Washington, IA. Neogen Corp announces Lon Bohannon has been promoted to be the company's Pres/COO. Bohannon will immediately replace James Herbert, who served as Neogen's Pres since its founding in 1982. Herbert will continue full-time responsibilities as CEO, where he will focus his attention on strategic growth and international expansion, and he will assume the position of Chmn of the board of directors. The USDA has published a final rule in the Federal Register revising National Organic Program (NOP) regulations to comply with the final court order in the Harvey v. Johanns court decision and to implement the 2005 amendments to the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990. The final rule restores the national list of synthetics used in products labeled as "organic" to their pre-lawsuit status. The final rule also revises NOP regulations to clarify that non-organically produced products listed in section 205.606 of the regulations may be used as ingredients in or on processed products labeled as "organic" only when such organic products are not commercially available. BASF announces the successful completion of its acquisition of Engelhard Corp. "Together with the Engelhard team we have started the integration process in which our customers continue to be the key priority," said Dr. Jurgen Hambrecht, Chmn of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF Aktiengesellschaft. "Our goal is to make Engelhard an integral part of BASF to leverage both companies' strong talent, technology and unique applications expertise. Integration teams consisting of BASF and Engelhard employees will assess the combined business needs." Chr. Hansen announces the appointment of William (Bill) Braman, PhD, as the new VP of Sls and Mktg - North America, for its Animal Health and Nutrition business unit. In his new position, he will be responsible for continuing the growth of Chr. Hansen's microbial-based feed additives and silage inoculants. Prior to joining Chr. Hansen, he was Nat'l Sls Mgr for Milk Products. Ted A. Priebe joins ABG, Indianapo-lis, IN, and its senior mgt team to lead the firm's marketing efforts and support ABG's business development and branding offer package. Priebe was a founding partner of Meyocks & Priebe Advertising, Inc., and was Pres of Miller Meester Advertising, Inc., of Minneapolis, the country's largest agricultural advertising agency in the late 1980s. Prior to his agency experience, he was Pub-lisher of AgriMarketing magazine. ABG also announces the promotion of Raymond Richie to VP of Alignment Solutions. Richie will serve as a member of the senior management team and provide leadership to ABG's capabilities in strategic consulting and marketing research. Prior to joining ABG, Richie worked with groups such as Indianapolis-based Cap Gemini and Hewlett-Packard. Vishal Singal joins ABG as an Associate and will manage, develop and implement strategy and marketing research projects. Singal recently earned his MBA from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, where he served in leadership roles in the Consulting Academy and developed his expertise in strategy, finance and marketing. While pursuing his MBA, Singal worked with Daimler Chrysler Services as a business strategy intern. Market Probe has acquired Marketing Horizons, Inc., St. Louis, MO. Earl Wims, co-founder of Marketing Horizons, has retired from the company. Co-founder Robert Jasper has assumed the title of Sr VP at Market Probe and oversees the day-to-day management of the operations.
