ZOETIS WINS INNOVATION AWARD FOR CLARIFIDE PLUS
Source: Zoetis news release

CLARIFIDE Plus from Zoetis was recognized as a dairy industry-changing product at the 2016 Dairy Herd Management Innovation Awards ceremony on Oct. 4 at World Dairy Expo. CLARIFIDE Plus was selected for being a game changer for dairy producers in the areas of efficiency, functionality and technology. Product winners were selected based on their originality within the marketplace, usefulness and value to dairy producers. Judges consisted of dairy producers, university experts and agribusiness representatives.

In March, Zoetis launched CLARIFIDE Plus, the first commercially available, U.S.-based genomic test that gives dairy producers the ability to directly predict disease risk in Holstein cattle. CLARIFIDE Plus offers new genomic predictions for wellness traits that provide direct indication of the genetic risk for six of the most common and costly animal health diseases: mastitis, lameness, metritis, retained placenta, displaced abomasum and ketosis.

Health events have a significant impact on herd health, salable milk and producer profitability, and they cost dairy producers billions of dollars annually. Profitability is enhanced when a dairy has the advantage of mature cows that are productive and healthy for multiple lactations. For the first time, dairy producers can use genomics to select heifers based on wellness traits and other economically important traits to help build a healthier, more productive herd. CLARIFIDE Plus offers dairy producers an unprecedented opportunity to test Holstein animals early in life in order to make herd selection decisions informed by genetic information that can significantly impact their operation's future success.

"Enhancing herd health, total salable milk and long-term profitability require comprehensive approaches that utilize multiple complementary technologies, including genetic selection for production, reproduction, health and wellness," said Cheryl Marti, associate director, U.S. Marketing, Dairy Genetics and Reproduction, Zoetis. "We're excited that the dairy industry is recognizing the benefits of CLARIFIDE Plus for the well-being of their herd and their dairy's bottom line."

CLARIFIDE Plus genetic predictions have an exceptional average estimated reliability of 49% to 51% for the six wellness traits in young animals.1 These predictions were generated from millions of on-farm dairy records and cutting-edge methodology.

Zoetis also developed two proprietary economic selection indexes in CLARIFIDE Plus:
Dairy Wellness Profit Index (DWP$) and Wellness Trait Index (WT$). They are critical components of all genetic selection strategies, as they provide a path for dairy producers to select for comprehensive genetic improvement across a host of traits.

Together, all of the information combined in CLARIFIDE Plus gives producers the most comprehensive package of trait predictions for Holstein cattle, enabling use of genetic selection along with good herd management to help reach their herd health and profitability goals. Also, CLARIFIDE Plus touches the seven outcomes identified as part of the Dairy Wellness initiative from Zoetis. These outcomes include healthy calves, robust heifers, improved repro, healthy hooves, productive cows, quality milk and healthy beef.
