IOWA'S BEST BURGER FOUND IN STORM LAKE'S SMOKIN' HEREFORD BBQ RESTAURANT
Sioux City Journal reports:

Manager Jonathon Borjas, kitchen supervisor Ileck Thammathai and front house manager Natalie Schumann show off burgers from their restaurant, Smokin Hereford BBQ, which is now home to Iowa's Best Burger
Locally sourced beef and made-to-order half-pound burgers led to a Storm Lake barbecue joint claiming the title of serving Iowa's Best Burger.

The staff of Smokin' Hereford BBQ of Storm Lake found out Monday morning that they received the accolade. This annual contest is presented by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen's Association to find the state's best burger and honor the state's beef producers.

"Oh we were extremely excited when they gave us the great news," said Natalie Schumann, front-line manager of Smokin' Hereford.

Early Monday morning, WHO Radio of Des Moines appeared at Smokin' Hereford alongside representatives of the beef council and cattleman's association and announced the win over a live broadcast, Schumann said.

Also in attendance were staff members from Coon River Farms of Nemaha, Iowa, which supplies the beef used in Smokin' Hereford's award-winning burgers.

"It's a farm-to-table deal with Coon River Farms," Schumann said. "We do 100 percent Hereford beef, so it's not Angus, which a lot of people are familiar with ... and we process whole spears from them."

From there, Schumann said they grind the beef into a ground chuck that's eventually used to form the patties.

"It's got the steak and beef all ground up together - it's like the whole cow ground up - so it creates a way better flavor," she said.

The burger is served either pink or no-pink, as Schumann puts it, and each is made-to-order. Burgers are served with a choice of cheese and standard toppings, but can also be customized with additional toppings ranging from fried banana peppers to macaroni and cheese.

"It's a half-pound and not a smashed patty at all - it's pretty big, juicy," Schumann said.
